Frankie Magazine July/August 2008 (Matilda Cloche)

Frankie
The Matilda knit cloche hat pattern is available in the July/August 2008 issue of Frankie magazine!

Australian readers, I do have some kits for sale in my Etsy shop, and the kit includes the Tillie brim option and the Rosie crochet flower pattern.

I have not gotten my copy of the magazine yet, so I'm not sure if it mentions that the cloche hat in the photo has two rows of trim covering the seam, not just one as the pattern calls for.

Tillie (Peace Fleece Ukrainian Red)

Tillie (Peace Fleece Ukranian Red)
Pattern: Matilda & Tillie
Yarn: Peace Fleece Ukrainian Red

This is the "plain" brim version of Tillie (instead of the rolled stockinette hem, this has a slip-stitch hem), and I've made the crown about an inch shallower. After watching Gosford Park again earlier this week, I wanted to make a version more like Mary Maceachrans.

It's a badly lit photo of a color notoriously difficult to photograph, but I didn't want to forget to do an in-progress shot; I know that some knitters have felt really dubious about the pattern at this point. I intend to take more in-progress photos to show how it goes from this weird frisbee with warped strip to a lovely little cloche.

Tillie (Peace Fleece Ukranian Red)
You can see the way the brim fabric biases away from the slip-stitch hem in this shot.

My Etsy shop is currently offering a Matilda & Tillie DIY Knit Kit with PDF download, professionally printed hardcopy, and skein of Peace Fleece Ukrainian Red for sale.

DIY KNIT KIT: Matilda and Tillie Cloche Hats

Matilda & Tillie cover
Matilda & Tillie Knit Cloche Hats Pattern

I listed most of the Matilda & Tillie Cloche Hat knit kits in the DIY Kits section of my Etsy shop (still working on how to set up the shopping cart for the blog) and some of the colors are so delightful I'm tempted to hold them back.

Chickie Masla

Yarn: Peace Fleece worsted, colorway Chickie Masla
This colorway reminds me of buttered popcorn!
Matilda & Tillie Knit Kit, Chickie Masla, $18.50 (includes postage in US; international add $5)

Anna's Grasshopper
Yarn: Peace Fleece worsted, colorway Anna's Grasshopper
This color is so much like the early days of spring in a temperate climate.

Ukranian Red
Yarn: Peace Fleece worsted, Ukrainian Red
This is a bright true red, very 50's lipstick.

DIY KNIT KIT: Matilda and Tillie Cloche Hats

DIY Knit Kit

I got the order of Peace Fleece in today, and have listed a kit in Zarya Fog on Etsy [SOLD] - more to come as I get photos of the different yarn colors. Right now I'm setting it up so that the yarn for the hat and the yarn for the Rosie motif are separate listings - I want people to be able to choose if they want to get yarn for the Rosie, and if so, which color. The price includes postage in the US, and international postage is $5.00. The Matilda & Tillie Knit Cloche Hat kit includes both a PDF download and a professionally printed version of the pattern (Rosie included).

Edited to add: all the kits are in the DIY Kit section of the shop.

Error Alert! Matilda & Tillie (or, pass the humble pie again please)

One more time!  The rate of increases for the Tillie brim was off by one stitch. Should read:

Rows 3 - 12 (12, 14, 14, 16): repeat rows 1 and 2
Row 13 (13, 15, 15, 17): repeat row 1 [end with 17 (17, 19, 19, 21, 21) sts]

If you purchased the pattern through my blog, Etsy shop, or eBay store, the download link you were emailed will now take you to the updated download (if you got a PDF as an attachment, you may prefer to download the newest corrections). I did get some delivery failures, and some of you have purchased paper patterns from Tangle, Granola Yarn, and Pollywogs (they will be getting reprints of pages 5 and 6 in the mail; if you purchased from the brick-and-mortar shop you may be able to pick up a free, corrected printout of pages 5 and 6), so I've set up a free download of the corrected pages. If you purchased a pattern after February 07, 2008, you have the most up-to-date version of the pattern and do not need the corrected pages.

You may download the corrected pages for free using the Add to Cart button below. You will be asked for a first name, last name, and email address (information will not be sold or given out; will be used for any future updates necessary). If you do not wish to give the information, you will still be able to download the update; just type in something like "No Name" for first and last name and "noemail@noemail.com" for email address.

Price Increases: January 31, 2008

After sitting down with all my sales info from last quarter, I have been both thrilled (if you have purchased a pattern or finished item from me, you have directly contributed to things like replacing the badly balding tires on my car), and dismayed (PayPal gets more money from my business than my state and federal tax collectors combined).

I have been reluctant to raise prices. However, the cold hard numbers staring back at me from my computer screen say that if I would like to be able to offer my customers more (like, say, nice professional charts with all patterns), a price increase would be a good business move.

Business: that's the third time I've used that word in this post. I'm trying to use it more often, to remind myself that this isn't a hobby for me any more. Last September, I was holding down 3 part-time jobs. In October, I found myself with just 1 job. I'm enjoying the extra time I get to spend with my family (outdoors, even), and I'd like to continue doing something that feeds my creative side and gives something back to the knit/crochet community. Fingers crossed: and price increases to go into effect January 31, 2008.

Matilda & Tillie: knit cloche hat pattern

Snapz_pro_xscreensnapz001

Matilda & Tillie
Peace Fleece worsted weight knitting yarn (70% wool, 30% mohair), 4 oz/200 yds, color of your choice
XS, S, M, L, XL (18", 20", 22", 24", 26")
US 6/4.0mm dpns, 1 set of 5
US 6/4.0mm circular needle (16")
US G/4.25 mm crochet hook

Hats for chilly seasons, these close-fitting wool cloche hats are designed to keep out cold and blustery winds. The heather mohair blend yarn enhances the vintage style; the crown and brim colors look subtly different depending on the angle and the light.  Tiny flecks of many colors make these wearable with just about any color in your wardrobe.  These hats will also travel well, easily stuffed into a coat pocket or a bag, and can be dressed up easily with pins, brooches, and other decorations.

The crown is knit from the top down, ending right above the ears. The brim is worked separately as a long bias strip with increases and decreases to shape it as you go and is sewn to the crown.  A simple knit i-cord or crocheted cord trims the hat and covers the seam.  Matilda has a plain brim; Tillie has a shaped brim with a knit-in hem, which can be worn with the narrow edge at the back (allowing for jacket and coat collars) or at the side for retro flair.

Grand Junction, CO 81501
Tangle carries some of the potential substitute yarns listed in the pattern, including SWTC Karaoke and Cascade Eco Wool.

Substitute yarns:
You may substitute a worsted weight yarn on the sturdy end of the yarn spectrum; I would not recommend any soft, floppy yarns like alpaca.
Southwest Trading Co. Vickie Howell "Rock"
Hemp for Knitting "HempWol"
Cascade "Eco-Wool"
Vermont Organic Fiber Co. "O-Wool Classic" and "O-Wool Balance"

A note on gauge: Peace Fleece comes in solid, flecked, and heathered versions, which may be slightly different thicknesses, so do check your gauge and change needle sizes if necessary.  The pattern is worked at a tighter than usual gauge to get a fairly dense, slightly stiffer fabric.  If this is hard on your hands, be sure to take time out to rest and stretch your hands and arms!

Knitalong?  I'm hosting one on Ravelry!  If you'd like to start one, please feel free to!  I chose to host on Ravelry because it's easier for me, but until the beta phase is over, it won't be accessible to the general public.
